An Unlikely Mentor: How Tai Christensen’s Mortgage Career Began

Sometimes, the most unexpected people can play pivotal roles in shaping our careers. For Tai Pherribo Christensen, President of Arrive Home, that person was her husband’s ex-wife. This surprising mentor helped kickstart Christensen’s journey in the mortgage industry, leading her to become one of the top professionals in the field today.

Christensen’s introduction to the mortgage world came at a time when she had just become a new mother. During a casual phone conversation, her husband’s ex-wife, who was a contract loan processor working remotely, suggested that Christensen might make an excellent underwriter. At the time, Christensen had a background in interior design and had never considered a career in mortgages. However, the idea of working from home was appealing, especially with a new baby to care for.

Taking the advice to heart, Christensen enrolled in the Mortgage Training Institute in 2002, where she completed courses in originations, processing, and underwriting. With her certification in hand, she began working remotely for three brokerages in Salt Lake City. Her mentor continued to guide her during this first year, teaching her the intricacies of the industry and how to effectively multitask. Christensen credits this early mentorship as a foundational element of her success.

Over the years, Christensen’s career flourished. She transitioned from remote processing to a decade-long role in loss mitigation before returning to retail. Her expertise and dedication eventually earned her a spot on the Global 100 list, recognizing her as one of the top mortgage industry professionals worldwide.

Today, as the President of Arrive Home, Christensen leads a program that provides down payment assistance and alternative credit solutions to underserved communities. Her commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) has been a consistent theme throughout her career. Prior to her current role, she served as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer at CBC Mortgage Agency, where she oversaw the Chenoa Fund, a nationwide down payment assistance program aimed at making housing more accessible.

Christensen continues to be a vocal advocate for DEI, frequently speaking at conferences and hosting a podcast focused on these important issues. As of January, she also co-chairs the DEI committee for the California MBA.

Reflecting on her journey, Christensen attributes much of her success to her ability to connect with people—a trait she developed early in life. Whether networking at industry events or leading initiatives at Arrive Home, her passion for people and commitment to making a difference have been key to her achievements.

Christensen’s story is a powerful reminder that sometimes, the most unexpected influences can lead us down paths we never imagined, resulting in rewarding and impactful careers.
