March is Women’s History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women who have shaped our society. Since its inception as Women’s History Week in 1982, this month has grown into a nationwide celebration of women’s contributions across all sectors. This year, the theme set by the National Women’s History Alliance is especially relevant: Women who advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion.
In the mortgage and title industries, women have been making significant strides, breaking barriers, and leading with innovation and compassion. U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia Fudge recently acknowledged the powerful legacy of women like Patricia Roberts Harris, the first Black woman appointed to a president’s cabinet and the first Black woman to serve as HUD Secretary. Fudge’s tribute to Harris serves as a reminder of the importance of continuing the fight for equality and justice in all areas of society.
To mark Women’s History Month, RESPA News reached out to several women leaders in the industry to hear their stories, achievements, and insights on how the industry can further support and empower women professionals.
Getting Started in the Industry
For many women, the path to a career in the mortgage and title industries wasn’t a straight line. Lindsay Smith, Chief Strategy Officer at Title Alliance, started her journey at the front desk of a Title Alliance office during high school. Loretta Salzano, President of Franzén and Salzano, began as a commercial closing attorney before transitioning into mortgage law. Meanwhile, Tai Christensen, Co-Founder and President of Arrive Home, entered the mortgage industry thanks to a suggestion from her husband’s ex-wife, who saw Christensen’s potential as a remote loan processor.
Favorite Achievements
These women have accomplished incredible feats in their careers. Leslie Wyatt, Director of Regulatory Compliance at SoftPro, highlights her experience representing the American Land Title Association at a congressional briefing as a significant moment in her career. For Christensen, co-founding Arrive Home and creating innovative housing solutions for underserved markets has been deeply meaningful work.
Supporting and Empowering Women
The mortgage and title industries have made progress in supporting women professionals, but there is always room for improvement. Many of the women interviewed emphasized the importance of mentorship, support networks, and continuing education. Kathy Kwak, Chief Operating Officer at Proper Title, pointed out the need for more buy-in from male executives to proactively support women in leadership roles.
Looking Ahead
As we celebrate Women’s History Month, it’s also a time to look forward. Many of the women interviewed expressed excitement about the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. From participating in conferences to spending more time with family, they are focused on growth, both personally and professionally.
One notable event that supports women in the industry is the Women’s Leadership Summit (WLS), introduced by October Research, LLC in 2022. This event empowers women across all industries by providing a supportive network to help guide them toward their goals. The WLS Community also offers monthly meetings where professionals can discuss challenges and share insights.
As we honor the achievements of women in the mortgage and title industries this month, let’s continue to strive for a future where equity, diversity, and inclusion are not just goals but realities in every sector.
